Review: Shiner Smokehaus Mesquite Smoked Beer A-

The Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas arguably makes the best beer in Texas. They produce at least eight varieties, but by far, their most popular is the Shiner Bock. Now they have a new beer, called Shiner Smokehaus. It's a beer with hints of smoked mesquite that brings forth memories of many enjoyed beers at many backyard barbecues.

Wine Recommendation: Purple Cowboy Tenacious Red 2006

Anytime I find a good wine for less than $10, I like to recommend it. Purple Cowboy Tenacious Red is one such wine. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah and has a dark berry flavour with a dash of chocolate. Although it was enjoyable right after opening - it was noticeably better the following day. I recommend opening it and letting it breath for a few hours. If you have a decanter, use it, for this wine appreciates aeration.

Graceland Cellars - Elvis wine!

Graceland Cellars has a new website. Elvis fans can order wine from the central coast with Elvis on the label. Unfortunately I live in a backwards 3rd world state (Texas) where it is illegal to have wine shipped directly to the consumer. Their website does have a directory of retailers that carry the wine, and there are some, nearby.

Wine Recommendation: Nurnberg Gluhwein

There is a late cold front - meaning today is probably the last day for this season that the house will be below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The perfect day to drink the last bottle of Gluhwein.

Nurnberg is a Bavarian town famous both for its Christmas market and its Nurnberger Markt Gluhwein. Gluhwein is a spiced wine that is served hot.

Serve hot, in a large mug. The heat will help the body metabolize it faster, giving a nice little buzz on a cold evening.

Beer: Old Speckled Hen

There's nothing like a good British ale. Old Speckled Hen is such an ale. Unfortunately I am enjoying this beer in it's pasteurized bottle version instead of from a cask, but it is still good. The bottle is about 1/2 a percent stronger in alcohol, though, at 5.2%.

Old Speckled Hen was first brewed in 1979 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the MG automobile factory. It's yeast comes from a culture started in 1896.

It's not as easy to find, over here in the states, as back in England, but if you look in the specialty beer section of your local liquor store, you should be able to find it. Old Speckled Hen even has a Facebook fan page.

I'm enjoying this beer thanks to Ryanne & Andrew.
