Nigella Lawson comes to Houston

The amazingly lovely Nigella Lawson came to Houston on Wednesday to do a book signing at the Williams-Sonoma at Town & Country Village and I played hooky from work to meet her.

Nigella first came to my attention with her television show Nigella Bites. The best description for that show is "food erotica". Artfully shot, hosted by the sensual Nigella and featuring food that hits every pleasure center, it is a joy to watch. That show was followed by other shows including Nigella, Nigella Feasts and Nigella Express.

She also has several cookbooks. For the holiday season she has a new book called Nigella Christmas: Food Family Friends Festivities

The book signing was well run and organized. Nigella was there for less than two hours and the store ran out of her books (they said they had 250 copies of her new book and backstock of her older books). Unbelievably she is even more gorgeous in person than on TV. She is tall, with an hourglass figure and tiny waist and her skin looks a decade younger than her age. Every time a fan handed her a book to sign she gave a radiant smile and was friendly. Definitely better than a day at work.

Here's a sample video from one of Nigella's shows:

And here is a 5 minute BBC interview with her.

Review: Burger Tex B

Burger Tex is a chain of hamburger restaurants that started in Austin, Texas. I visited the one near NASA, south of Houston. The chain is owned by Korean Americans and the restaurant features a Bulgoki Korean burger. I didn't try that, though. I had the 8oz burger combo.

The burger was a typical choice chuck ground beef burger. The 8oz size gave the sandwich a better proportion of meat to bread than a typical 4oz burger. What really made the burger stand out was the condiments bar. The condiments bar was fully loaded, with fresh sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, jalapenos, relish, etc. I like my burger with 3-4 slices of tomato - so, being able to customize my burger made it that much more enjoyable.

Service was pretty quick and the prices not bad. The menu can be examined at their website (link above).

Review: Our Town at the Alley Theatre D

Our Town is probably playwright Thornton Wilder's most known work. It was written in the 1930s and is pseudo-set in that period. It's described as essential, enduring, and an unsurpassed American masterpiece.

I think I saw a different play.

La Brisa Mexican Bar & Grill - October special

If you're in Houston, stop by La Brisa for their delicious October special. It is called Alegria and is composed of smoked sausage, grilled shrimp, pork tenderloin, and Cornish game hen, on a bed of grilled onions, with charro beans, pico di gayo, rice, and tortillas.
